Vegan pastry shop rolling along


WITH a career in advertising and human-resources consulting, Ben Reedy wanted his next business to be sweet.

With his wife, Nicki, the duo opened Cinnaholic, a vegan cinnamon-roll franchise on the edge of the South Side.

“I really wanted to do something more tangible and, honestly, it’s a fun business,” Ben Reedy said. “Anybody that comes in, they’re happy to be here and like what you’re selling.”

The shop at 812 S. Alamo St., Suite 113, launched Feb. 14, joining 40-plus others including in the El Paso, Dallas and Houston areas.

During the pandemic, hours are noon to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with takeout, curbside service and delivery through third-party apps.

Shannon and Florian Radke created Cinnaholic in Berkeley, California, in 2010. After appearing on ABC’s “Shark Tank” in 2014, franchising began.

The fare is prepared from scratch daily without animal byproducts.

“It’s a totally vegan concept. Everything is egg and dairy-free, not that you would know it from the way everything tastes. It’s really good,” Reedy said.

Diners can sample and then pick from more than a baker’s dozen of flavors including almond, marshmallow, lemon and cream cheese, plus two-dozen toppings of fruits, nuts, chocolate and caramel sauces.

Among numerous combination rolls is the Southtown Brew with pecans, coconut and coffee dust. The most popular, Breakfast in Bed, created by Nicki Reedy, has strawberry frosting and is topped with strawberries, blueberries, pie crumble and powdered sugar.

Spring additions include orange cream and toasted coconut pies.

Cinnaholic also offers brownies, chocolate-chip cookies, cookie dough and java from Brown Coffee Co.

During regular operation, hours are 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, and 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.
