Jamaica Jamaica Cuisine’s proprietors said their grub is so nice they named it twice.
“It’s great Jamaican food in San Antonio by veterans and it’s cooked to pass the love,” said Demetrius “Dee” Gordon, who owns the restaurant with her husband, Angello.
The eatery in Rolling Oaks Mall, 6909 N. Loop 1604 East, Suite 2066, debuted last November.
As of late March, Rolling Oaks Mall is closed until further notice due to COVID-19. However, curbside service is available from the kitchen; call ahead or check the eatery’s Facebook page.
The Gordons served in the Army medical field for 21 years; Dee retired as a sergeant first class and Angello as a master sergeant. The husband, who is Jamaican, said he wanted to open a restaurant.
“Our whole concept basically is comfort food with friends and family, while making friends and family,” Dee Gordon said.
After launching their first place in 2011, they moved to a bigger spot with a full bar and party room five years later at 2026 Austin Highway. The mall site is their second.
Gordon said the Jamaican dishes pack more heart than spice.
“Jamaica food is the same food that you eat — chicken, fish, rice, beans, vegetables, whatever. It just has a different flavor profile,” she added.
Popular items include a brown stew that’s a little sweet; Jamaican curries, with either chicken or goat; and jerk chicken. The rasta pasta is also tops with the “Jam Jam Fam,” the nickname for loyal diners.
Customers can try fusion dishes, such as the mango scotch bonnet wings and jerk burger.
Military, teachers and mall employees receive discounts.
During regular operation, hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.
