Professed “bird nerd” Kyle Odom is the new owner of Wild Birds Unlimited, which has been supplying everything needed to entice feathered friends to visit yards since 1996.

“The big point about what we do here is so people can enjoy the birds, so people can find relaxation and joy through feeding the birds,” Odom said.

The shop at 14602 Huebner Road, Suite 114, is in the Olmos Creek Shopping Center.

After years of laboring in the world of corporate technology, Odom took over the franchise in September.

“I have been a backyard bird enthusiast pretty much all my life,” he said.

Seed stock at the shop is geared to the diets of local avians, including chickadees, hummingbirds, blue and scrub jays, cardinals and finches.

“There’s nothing in any of the bags that the birds are not going to eat, and it’s specific to our birds,” Odom said.

The company’s mission is conservation, Odom said, adding he wants to attract younger birders.

“Getting young people involved from a conservation point of view is going to help the bird population,” he said.

Visitors to the store also will find birdhouses and feeders, critter deterrents, squirrel food, bird baths and other water supplies, books, binoculars and nature-based gifts.

Wild Birds Unlimited also provides expert advice through educational seminars and works with local Audubon societies. Jim Carpenter founded the company in Indianapolis in 1981.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.
