Authentic Japanese dishes touted at new eatery

Traditional Japanese fare takes center stage at Hero’s Ramen x Sushi in Embassy Oaks shopping center, with the added plus of a mini-market, staffers said.

“Interestingly, people don’t eat ramen in summer, people don’t eat sushi in winter,” said Ryotaro Seki, who consults with the restaurant to provide “high-quality water” for the authentic dishes. “If we provide sushi and ramen at the same place, it should be really very convenient.”

Hero’s debuted in September at 13444 West Ave., Suite 200, in the spot formerly occupied by Habanero’s Grill. The eatery also includes a small shop with Japanese candy, drinks and toys.

Hiroyuki Kawashima, who manages Ramen x Sushi, hails from Kanazawa, Japan. He moved to the States in 2007 and helped open Houston-based Ramen Bar Ichi in 2016.

The restaurant serves ramen, an array of sushi, and some appetizers including tempura shrimp and takoyaki, or ball-shaped cakes containing chopped octopus and wheat batter cooked on a griddle.

The tonkotsu ramen is made with a salt base and bone broth from pork and chicken. The miso ramen uses the tonkotsu as the broth and miso, fermented soybean paste and kaeshi, for a salty-sweet sauce as a base.

Seki said the mini-market’s candies make a good dessert.

“(Diners) choose the candy, choose the chocolates. It’s kind of good fun for customers, so that’s why he (Kawashima) thought … to put a store in the entrance,” Seki said.
