Martial-arts lesson includes confidence

SCHERTZ — More than just self-protection is being taught to children and adults at Brazilian Top Team, where the husband-and-wife gym owners also stress physical fitness and self-confidence.

“It’s good exercise, it’s self-defense, it’s going to help you build your self-esteem, especially for the kids,” said head coach and co-owner Diego Gamonal Nogueira.

He and his wife, Edenilce “Denise” Duraes Gamonal Nogueira, opened the business at 1420 Schertz Parkway, Suite 100 in March.

One of the studio’s in-demand disciplines is Brazilian jiujitsu, a martial arts and combat sport focused on grappling and throwing an opponent to the ground.

“The idea is to fight and keep safe,” he added.

Brazilian jiujitsu classes are available for ages 3 to adult. Muay Thai, or Thai boxing, is

open to just kids. Youngsters learn how to behave, listen and be more disciplined, the coach said. Other lessons include anti-bullying techniques and building confidence.

“The best thing is the feedback from the parents,” said Nogueira, 36, a third-degree black belt.

The Nogueiras hail from Brazil. The husband ventured stateside in 2011 and then opened an academy in Texas. The couple now owns others in San Antonio, Austin and Florida.

“I saw that dream, that this can grow,” he said of the company Murilo Bustamante originally established some two decades ago.

Class hours vary. A schedule is available on its website.
