It’s all about science at Orangetheory Fitness, where members monitor heart rates during full-body workouts designed to get fit, lose weight and feel better, according to the staff.
“If you follow your heart, you’re able to track your progress, you’re able to track your intensity and you can see your progression as you’re moving through your fitness journey,” said manager Edgardo Gonzalez.
Owner Manuel Torres recently opened the fitness studio in the Sunset Ridge shopping center, 6482 N. New Braunfels Ave. He also own ones in Stone Oak, on Bandera Road and in the cities of New Braunfels and Live Oak.
The workout pushes clients to get their heart rate into the “orange zone,” stimulating metabolism and increasing energy to burn calories for up to 36 hours. This process in which the body recovers oxygen lost during exercise is called “afterburn.”
“The members usually fall in love with the science behind it,” said coach Shawnee Pelletier.
Workouts differ every day, and feature high-intensity interval training. Every client wears a heart monitor.
Classes last one hour. The sessions are split into cardiovascular and strength training.
“You come in, you already know your workout is pretty much laid out for you,” Pelletier said. “(Coaches are) motivating you. They’re making the class upbeat, fun.”
The first session is free and class packages are available.
“Everyone who comes in here, no matter what fitness level they’re at, they get a good workout regardless,” Pelletier said.
