Comedy club dishes out more than jokes

Southtown’s newest nightspot, Jokesters 22 Pub ‘N Grub, is an all-in-one sports bar, dance hall and comedy club.

Jokesters recently opened at 713 S. Alamo St. and offers quirky drinking vessels for featured cocktails, including souvenir dog bowls and baby bottles.

“I love this location in Southtown,” said owner Marsha Mahaffey. “This is a great place for locals and tourists alike to gather.”

Mahaffey, who has 20 years in the industry, said folks need to have a chuckle every once in awhile, even when it comes to their libations.

“It’s important to have a sense of humor and be able to laugh at yourself,” she added. “Of course, you don’t have to have your drink served like that, but it’s fun to see people loosen up and leave their egos at the door.”

The club opens the main stage for open-mic night every Thursday, and hosts local and touring comedians Fridays and Saturdays for free.

The venue is split between two buildings, each with its own bar, and connected by a covered patio.

In addition, the club clears the comedy stage to make room for a dance floor while DJs spin tunes.

For now, the “grub” in the “pub and grub” are available from a food truck on the patio, but there are plans for a kitchen and full menu in the future.

Jokesters engages with the community by holding charity events, most recently a “Back to School for Teachers Comedy Show” and a benefit to fight cancer.

“I want the club to be a place for everyone. We all love to laugh,” Mahaffey said.

Singles, couples out on a date and tourists “can have a great time here,” she added.

The club offers daily specials and promotes weekly events such as “Tinder Tuesday” on Facebook.

Jokesters 22 Pub ‘N Grub offers daily discounts for first responders. Those in the hospitality industry receive a discount on Sundays.

Hours are 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
