Using locally sourced and fresh ingredients, Steel City Pops serves gourmet icy treats that make customers feel good about what they’re eating, say employees.
“We care about doing something that is high-quality, making good products, and also we care about doing something that has value and meaning behind it,” said general manager Ben Cleveland.
Steel City Pops, 17619 La Cantera Parkway, opened in The Rim June 14, joining another store at 812 S. Alamo St.
Owner Jim Watkins of Alabama started the business in 2012 after discovering paletas, or Mexican pops, on a trip to Nashville, Tennessee, nine years earlier. The chain now has more than two dozen locations across the South.
The strawberry, lemonade and cookies and cream tastes are popular, while jasmine green tea, buttermilk and dairy-free peanut butter cater to the nontraditional.
“I get something unique, and I get something that’s just right — a cool, refreshing treat,” Cleveland said.
Pops can be dipped in chocolate; dredged in nuts, coconut, chocolate or graham cracker crumbs; drizzled with chocolate or caramel; and dusted with cinnamon, cocoa, nutmeg, sea salt, cayenne or espresso.
All are gluten-free and the fruity varieties are vegan.
“We work really hard to provide our customers with a complete experience in the store, not just like a place where you run in, grab a treat, and leave, but giving them a great experience where they can hang out with friends and family,” Cleveland said.
Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
