Little Surprises has brought its “kawaii-inspired” merchandise — cute Japanese pop culture gifts and more — after recently reopening in the Huebner Oaks Center at 11745 Interstate 10 West, Suite 118.
The shop carries a plethora of items for all ages, from Hello Kitty collectibles, Japanese candy and figurines to plush Pusheens and more.
“We market (Little Surprises) as a super kawaii gift store,” said owner Sherryl Lopez. “In Japan, they say kawaii for cute. When my sister and I were growing up, we liked this kind of stuff and we wanted to make a store that we could share with others.”
She added, “There’s a variety. There’s not just stuffed animals, there are things for all ages. Some people walk in and say, ‘Oh my god, this is a little girl’s dream,’ but if you look at the items, for instance, the purses on the walls … are not for little girls.”
The family-owned business originally began in La Palmera Mall in Corpus Christi in 2009 by Lopez as part of an entrepreneurship project for her business degree.
“My dad had just retired from the U.S. Navy and said, ‘Here’s 10,000 bucks, try something.’ I had always wanted a Hello Kitty store, so I said, ‘Let’s do it,’” Lopez said.
After four years, Little Surprises located to McAllen when Lopez and her sister, Roxanne, decided to move away from home. Her sister helps manage the store.
“Then I moved to Florida (for an internship with Disney),” Lopez said. “(When) I moved back to Texas, we opened in North Star Mall in 2014. It’s just been an on-and-off again thing, but I hope to keep it on all the way now.”
