Siblings Brenda and Alex Sarmiento have opened their third Yellowfish Sushi promoting Japamex dining — a fusion of Japanese and Mexican flavors — which they grew up with in Mexico City.

“We’re not mom and pop, we’re bro and sis. It’s our livelihood, it’s our everyday work,” Brenda Sarmiento said. “It’s just the product of working hard every day, and it’s our home now.”

The new locale is at 17711 Interstate 10 West, Suite 104 in The Rim shopping center. The first is at 9102 Wurzbach Road and the second at 16615 Huebner Road.

According to Sarmiento, the menu and atmosphere is a far cry from traditional sushi restaurants. The duo wanted an inexpensive place where diners didn’t have to dress up.

Yellowfish Sushi offers a variety of selections, from hand rolls to raw and non-raw baked and fried rolls; and poké bowls and japarritos, which are burrito-sized rolls.

The Sarmientos love exposing patrons to new tastes.

“We’re definitely constantly playing around with the menu and with the flavors. Even sometimes our customers give us ideas,” Sarmiento said.

Everything is made to order, and features the Japamex practice of adding habanero and serrano peppers, chipotle and cilantro to dishes.

A popular item, the Yellowfish Roll, consists of picante shrimp, avocado and cilantro on the inside, with fresh yellowtail, habanero-infused caviar and red salsa outside.

Hours are 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, 12:30-11 p.m. Saturday, and 12:30-9 p.m. Sunday.
