Built from 22 large shipping crates, The Pod doesn’t look like a typical eatery, but don’t let that stop you from sampling the global menu, said executive chef Clifford Matthews. “Each container has its own story. Like the containers, the food concept is the same,” said Matthews, who also is the general manager.

Housed in distinctive orange and blue storage pods, the restaurant at 18745 Redland Road opened Jan. 26, and then celebrated a grand reopening in September. It is anchored by an outdoor patio for dining, and children can enjoy a 22,000-square-foot grassy play area.

Matthews said the menu offers a wide variety of fresh, scratch-made meals.

Popular selections include the Pod Burger, South American Shrimp Ceviche and Grilled Rib-Eye Tacos, alongside other Mexican, Italian and traditional American fare. The Pod also serves hand-battered onion rings and homemade ketchup, tortillas and buns. Matthews chose the North Side locale because the growing area seemed to lack unique places to dine, he said. Live-music performances on the patio take place Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Libations include a dozen beers on draft, wine and margaritas. Happy hours are 3 p.m. to closing Tuesday and Wednesday and 3-6:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday.

“During the weekend you can see the real atmosphere, a lot of life,” Matthews said.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
