Veteran-Soldiers

As our community on July Fourth commemorates America’s birthday and the armed forces preserving our freedom, it’s also time to honor the Hidden Heroes Cities initiative.

Our wounded warriors returning from active duty are indeed worthy of praise. However, it’s their caretakers behind the scenes who are the hidden heroes — mothers, fathers, wives, husbands, brothers, sisters and medical professionals.

These selfless caregivers need more than just gratitude.

That’s where joining Hidden Heroes Cities, a program championed by former District 10 Councilman Mike Gallagher, a retired Air Force officer, comes into play.

Officials have designated San Antonio as a Hidden Heroes City, part of a nationwide network of municipalities committed to identifying and unifying support and resources for military and veteran caregivers.

Many ills plague our returning service members, from physical and psychological trauma to homelessness.

San Antonio, also known as Military City, USA, became part of the Hidden Heroes family with City Council approval in May. Backed by the council’s resolution, the populace must step up and pledge to assist veterans in any way possible, including sharing resources.
