Merkaba is a new River Walk cocktail lounge taking flavors inspired by ancient Mexican and Central American cultures to another level, staffers say.
“We wanted to do something that really fit in with San Antonio,” said Rob Bernstein, vice president of Howl at the Moon, which owns Merkaba. Merkaba opened in October at 111 W. Crockett St., Suite 205.
The name derives from three mystical words. Mer means light, ka is spirit and ba is body.
The libations, created by several mixologists, include the Flower of Life Margarita, the Temple’d Fashioned and the Find-Your-Mojo Mojito.
“A lot of the inspiration for the menu came from the flavors that the ancient Mayans enjoyed, like honey, nutmeg and cinnamon,” Bernstein said.
Hand-blown, 60-ounce glasses shaped like mushrooms allow patrons to share drinks with their friends. The lounge is a full-service bar with wine and beer, and seating both inside and out on the patio.
At 10 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays, a deejay transforms the lounge into a nightclub with a sound system and lights.
“It’s just going to be the most fun place that you can go to in San Antonio to dance and also get drinks,” Bernstein said.
The dress code is upscale casual. Bernstein said the club won’t be as strict as others, but profanity or offensive language on clothing or in visible tattoos will not be allowed, nor will excessively ripped, torn or baggy apparel.
Hours are 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. daily. Happy hour is from 5 to 8 p.m. daily, with discounts on signature cocktails, wells, beer and wine.
