UNIVERSAL CITY — Customers craving endless bubble-tea combinations can find authentic versions of the Taiwanese beverage at Kung Fu Tea, said owner Jessica Yu.
“I think if they try it, they have a chance to like it,” Yu said. “Our teas are fresh. They’re not from tea bags.”
Kung Fu Tea, 3126 Pat Booker Road, Suite 108, held a grand opening May 4. The franchise boasts more than 170 locations nationwide, plus Canada, Vietnam and Australia.
Four friends created the company in 2009 after a visit to Taiwan.
In China, “kung fu” refers to the patience, energy and time it takes to complete a study or practice.
Yu, a native of China and bubble-tea fan since childhood, opened the local store because she hated traveling to Austin for the drink.
“I think it would be easier for me just to start my own business and bring something authentic to the area,” she said.
Choices include classic tea, milk tea, slush, punch, yogurt, lactose-free wow milk and espresso.
The taro slush and kung fu milk tea are the most popular. Taro is a root vegetable grown in the tropics of Asia.
Each libation can be customized, from adding bubbles, or tapioca pearls, to pudding, red beans, mung bean, jellies and popping flavored bubbles.
Black, oolong and green teas are made fresh every four hours, as is the tapioca.
Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
