Inspired by New Orleans and Cajun cuisine, Smashin Crab features seafood dishes with a focus on treating the customer right.
“We do it because, for one, we love this style of food. It’s laid back, it’s casual and it’s really family fun,” said manager and co-owner Derek Still.
Smashin Crab, 700 E. Sonterra Blvd., Suite 1117, opened in March. The first location, 8910 Bandera Road, Suite 305, celebrated its one-year anniversary in April.
“I love to cook, and I love to eat, and I love making people happy with that,” Still said.
After 17 years in Los Angeles, including a decade pursuing a singing and acting career, he reconnected with some old friends to see what the restaurant business could offer. Still relocated to Phoenix for three years, then moved to San Antonio with the idea for Smashin Crab.
The eatery serves snow crab, Alaskan king crab legs, Dungeness crab, blue crab from Houma, Louisiana, little neck clams and black mussels from the Atlantic, oysters on the half shell (also from Louisiana), catfish and fried oysters directly from the Texas coast.
“We want to evoke the flavors of this cuisine along with the seafood that people grew up with that they can’t really get out here,” Still said.
Supporting local breweries, Smashin Crab has a large beer selection, plus house-specialty cocktails, hurricanes, margaritas and a summer sangria made with white peach and strawberries.
“The food will bring people in; the service will make them come back,” Still said.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
