LIVE OAK — A new, family-owned Japanese-style restaurant is serving up traditional dishes on a hibachi grill along with a variety of sushi rolls.
Kobe Teppan & Sushi opened at 7824 Pat Booker Road in late April. The first location is in San Marcos.
The eatery features a hibachi, or a hot steel plate. Diners can choose from a selection of meats, seafood and sides such as fried rice. The meal is a culinary show prepared on the grill in front of hungry guests.
“It doesn’t really get any fresher than that,” said manager Andrew Chen.
To delight diners, chefs throw shrimp tails and catch them in their hats, as well as make onion “volcanoes” with steam.
Separate from the hibachi grill, the eatery also has a regular dining area serving an assortment of Asian dishes and sushi.
The Hurricane roll is one of the most popular items, according to Chen. It’s a tempura-style roll filled with cream cheese, spicy tuna and avocado, topped with kani crab, drizzled with spicy mayo and eel sauce, and sprinkled with diced jalapeños.
“Even if people aren’t … big sushi (eaters), we have a lot of rolls that are easy for people to begin with,” Chen said.
A unique Kobe sushi roll is the Double J, a tempura-style offering with crab, cream cheese and avocado. A chef at the San Marcos eatery created it.
Kobe offers “endless sushi” similar to a buffet, but each roll is made-to-order. Customers can also indulge in appetizers, salads and other fare at a flat rate.
Hours are 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
