A North Carolina-based doughnut franchise created by Russell A. DiGilio has made its way to San Antonio.
Duck Donuts is focused on customer service and taking doughnuts to the next level, said owner Ben Newell. The name comes from the town where DiGilio created the business — Duck.
“It starts with a warm, fresh doughnut for everybody,” Newell said.
Duck Donuts, located at 11703 Huebner Road, Suite 113 in Huebner Commons, opened in late January.
The eatery offers an assortment of doughnut flavors (including ones made to order), coffee, sandwiches and sundaes; catering is an option, too.
Each doughnut begins as a plain vanilla cake doughnut; then employees add a coating, topping and drizzle when customers order.
“We want everybody to be part of the whole process by talking, laughing and looking at their doughnuts being made,” Newell said.
According to Newell, the most popular pastry is a maple-coated doughnut topped with bacon and finished off with a caramel drizzle.
A doughnut special to Newell is the Sunrise, with a lemon coating, topped with shredded coconut and a raspberry drizzle. After his first visit to a Duck Donuts on the East Coast, this very pastry hooked the store owner.
Newell, who recently retired, worked for a Baptist mission organization for 21 years and helped coordinate work within impoverished communities. The last seven years were spent in South Texas, and after dedicating his time to helping others establish businesses, Newell decided to open one of his own.
“Sometimes it (a doughnut) can change your day. You eat it at the right time, everything falls into place and you feel better,” Newell said.
